Overview
A simple process that keeps the peace, works for family members who live far away, and leaves one clear pile for donation and cleanout.
Nobody argues about the sofa. The argument is over the recipe box, Dad’s watch and the photo albums, and it usually starts the first afternoon, when one sibling quietly puts something in the car. A clear process everyone agrees to before anyone starts taking things is the best protection. If the will or trust names who gets specific items, follow that first; what follows is for everything else. This guide is part of our Sacramento estate cleanout series.

Agree on the Rules Before Anyone Picks
- Set a date for the walk-through and give everyone notice, including family who cannot travel.
- Agree that nothing leaves the house until the process is done.
- Decide how ties are broken: a coin toss, or the item goes to whoever has fewer picks so far.
- Write the rules down and share them, so nobody is surprised later.
Take Turns in Rounds
The fairest common method is a rotating draft. Draw names for order, each person picks one item per round, and the order reverses each round so nobody always picks first. Keep a simple list of who took what. It doubles as a record for the executor.
Include Family Who Live Far Away
Photograph each room and the items people are likely to want, number them, and share the photos before the draft. Remote family can pick by number over a video call. Ship small items later, or arrange for someone local to hold them.
Photos, Letters and Small Keepsakes
Scan photo albums and letters so every branch of the family gets a copy, then decide who keeps the originals. It costs far less than a falling-out. Keep these out of the main rooms until the scanning is done, so they are not swept up with everything else.
What Nobody Claims
Once the draft is over, the remaining items can go to an estate sale, to charity or to a cleanout crew. Our guide to estate sale vs. estate cleanout covers the order. When the house is down to what nobody wants, our estate cleanout service takes the rest, and an out-of-town sibling can run the whole thing by phone. Put the items the family wants donated in one place and we drop them at a local charity when time and space allow.
“I came in from out of town and needed some quick help with junk removal. After sorting through dozens of competitors with similar ratings, I’m so glad I chose Serge at TCJ Hauling. As a small business owner myself, I appreciated the professionalism and care.”
