Thanks, Serge, for the quick, professional, and reasonably priced service. Will use you again - highly recommend!
Overview
Most estates use all three. The order you use them in decides how much money, time and effort the family spends.
The house is full, the siblings are in three time zones, and the agent wants it empty in a month. Three kinds of help exist for that. An estate sale company sells belongings for a share of the proceeds. A charity takes usable items for free. A cleanout crew removes everything left, for a fee. They are not competitors; they are steps, and the order matters. This guide is part of our Sacramento estate cleanout series.

The Order That Usually Works
- Family first. Everyone takes what they want before anything is sold. See dividing belongings among siblings.
- Valuables appraised. Jewelry, art, collections and firearms may be worth an appraisal or a specialist dealer before any sale.
- Estate sale, if it is worth it. The company prices, stages and sells over a few days.
- Donation. Leftover usable items go to charity. Some estate sale companies arrange this; otherwise set the items aside.
- Cleanout. A crew removes everything that is left and leaves the house broom-clean.
When an Estate Sale Is Worth It
Estate sale companies work on commission, so they look for houses with enough sellable goods to make a sale pay: quality furniture, collectibles, tools, newer appliances. Ask two or three companies to walk the house. If they all decline, that tells you something too.
Ask each company what happens to unsold items, how and when you get paid, and whether they leave the house empty or just tidy.
When to Skip It
- The contents are mostly older, worn or common furniture.
- The house has to be listed or turned over quickly.
- The home is very full or has hoarding conditions. See hoarder cleanouts.
- Family members live far away and cannot manage a multi-day sale.
Where Donation Fits
Charities only want items in good, sellable condition, and many will not take mattresses, worn upholstery or older electronics. Set donation items aside in one room or the garage before cleanout day. We take items the family has set aside to a local charity drop-off when time and space allow, but on a full-house job we do not sort every item for donation. Donation tax receipts come from the charity.
The Last Step
After the sale and the donations, what remains goes on our truck. Our estate cleanout service is priced by how much of the truck the leftovers fill, and we quote before any lifting starts. For the numbers, see estate cleanout cost in Sacramento. What that last step looks like from the customer side:
“Serge with TCJ Hauling has hauled away piles of junk for me twice and both times responded rapidly and removed same day. He’s very professional and fairly priced. I would and will continue to recommend him.”
