How to Prepare for a Hoarder Cleanout, and What the Day Looks Like
A cleanout goes better when a few decisions are made before the truck arrives. Here is what to settle first.
A hoarder cleanout is not a normal junk pickup. It is slower, it involves more decisions, and the person whose home it is needs to stay in control of it. A little preparation makes the day shorter, cheaper and far less upsetting. This guide is part of our Sacramento hoarder cleanout series.
Before the Day: Five Decisions
- What is the goal? One room, the paths and exits, or the whole house. A small first job that goes well is better than a big one that is abandoned at noon.
- Who decides? One person should have the final word, and ideally it is the homeowner.
- What stays, no matter what? Make the list ahead of time and mark those items or move them to one room.
- What are we looking for? Tell the crew about papers, jewelry, cash, photographs or anything else that must not be lost.
- What happens to donations? Decide whether usable items are worth setting aside. We take items you set aside for donation to a local charity when time and space allow.
Get an On-Site Estimate
A packed house can’t be priced from the curb. Ask for a walk-through and a written quote that states what is included. Use the visit to ask how the crew handles documents and valuables, and which items it will not take. See hoarder cleanout cost in Sacramento for typical numbers.
What a Hauling Crew Won’t Take
Set these aside before the day so the crew isn’t working around them: liquid paint, solvents, pesticides and pool chemicals; propane tanks; medications and sharps; ammunition; and anything contaminated with human or animal waste. Most have a free drop-off in Sacramento County at the North Area Recovery Station; our what we don’t take page has the full list. Areas with biohazards need a biohazard cleaning company, booked separately.
How the Day Runs
- The crew walks the house with you and confirms the plan and the keep list.
- Work starts at the entrance and moves inward, so there is always a clear way out.
- Obvious trash goes first. Boxes, bags and drawers are checked as they are emptied.
- Anything on the keep list, and anything that looks like a document, photo or valuable, goes to a set-aside area for you to review.
- The truck is loaded, leaves for the disposal site and returns if more loads are needed.
- At the end, you walk through together and the cleared areas are swept.
How Long It Takes
A single room can take a few hours. A full home can take two to five days or more, depending on volume and on how many decisions are made on the spot. Staging the job over several visits is common and often easier on the homeowner.
Looking After the Person
- Plan breaks, and agree on a signal to pause.
- Have a support person there who is not also directing the crew.
- Keep the set-aside pile visible. Seeing that things are being saved makes it easier to let other things go.
- Don’t add to the plan mid-day. If the agreement was the kitchen, stop at the kitchen.
After the Cleanout
Hauling leaves a home empty of clutter, not clean. Budget separately for deep cleaning, pest control and any repairs the piles were hiding. And plan for what comes next: clutter tends to return without ongoing support, so line up a therapist, a support group or a regular check-in. Our Sacramento hoarding resources page lists where to find them.
