The new fridge arrives Thursday. The old one is unplugged in the kitchen, the tenant in the back unit left a futon on the patio, and the gray cart is already full of the week’s trash. Nothing about that pile goes to the curb on your normal day, and in West Sacramento the rules for where it does go are specific.
This is the practical version of those rules: what each cart takes, how the city’s two free bulk pickups work and what they refuse, where hazardous waste and e-waste go in Yolo County, and when professional junk hauling services in West Sacramento make more sense than waiting on the city. We are based on Houston Street here, so this is our home turf.
Understanding West Sacramento’s Residential Waste Services
The City of West Sacramento runs a three-cart weekly collection through Waste Management:
- Gray cart (garbage): household trash that cannot be recycled or composted. Plastic bags, food wrappers, polystyrene foam, broken ceramics.
- Green cart (organics): yard trimmings and food waste. Grass, leaves, branches, fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, food-soiled paper.
- Blue cart (recycling): clean paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs, glass bottles and jars, metal cans.
That covers a normal week. The fridge, the futon and the contents of a garage do not fit any of the three, which is where bulk pickup and residential junk removal come in.
What Is Considered “Junk” or “Bulky Waste”?
Bulky waste is anything too big or too heavy for a cart with the lid closed:
- Furniture (sofas, mattresses, tables, chairs)
- Large appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves)
- Electronics (televisions, computers, printers)
- Lawn equipment (mowers, trimmers)
- Large amounts of yard waste or construction debris
Leave any of it next to the cart on trash day and it stays there. The city has a separate program for it.
West Sacramento’s Bulk Pickup Program
For a few big items with no deadline, the city’s bulk pickup is free and legal, and it is the first thing to try. When the pile is bigger than the limit or the deadline is this week, Sacramento junk hauling services fill the gap.
How the Bulk Pickup Service Works
Every West Sacramento residential account gets two free bulky pickup appointments a year, counted from July 1 to June 30. Book them with Waste Management; once both are used, the city’s Environmental Services office can issue a landfill voucher.
Scheduling: appointments are required. Nothing left at the curb without one gets collected. Call Waste Management directly, and call at least a week ahead, because slots fill.
Setting it out:
- Timing: at the curb by 6 a.m. on the pickup day, and not more than 24 hours before. A pile that sits for a week is a nuisance complaint waiting to happen.
- Bundling: loose wood scraps and brush tied in bundles.
- Access: nothing blocking the sidewalk, the bike lane or the street.
Accepted and Prohibited Items for Bulk Pickup
Accepted:
- Furniture: couches, chairs, tables, desks, mattresses, box springs.
- Appliances: refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers. Anything with Freon must have the refrigerant professionally removed and be tagged to show it.
- E-waste: televisions, computers, monitors and other electronics.
- General junk: bicycles, carpet (rolled and tied), lawn furniture, toys.
- Bundled yard waste: limbs and branches no longer than 4 feet, under 6 inches across, tied.
Prohibited:
- Hazardous waste: paint, chemicals, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, fluorescent bulbs. These go to a hazardous waste facility (below).
- Construction and demolition debris: concrete, dirt, rock, asphalt, and large amounts of wood or drywall.
- Tires: car and truck tires are not part of bulk pickup.
- Medical waste: syringes and similar items have their own disposal rules.
- Household garbage: anything that fits the gray cart does not belong in the bulk pile.
Mixing a prohibited item into the pile can get the whole pickup refused. Hazardous waste goes to the county HHW facility, mixed construction debris goes to a licensed C&D hauler or a debris dumpster, and a junk removal service takes the bulky household items over the city’s limit. After a tenant move-out, a pile is usually all three at once, which is the headache.
When Bulk Pickup Isn’t Enough: Professional Junk Removal
Two pickups a year, a one-week lead time and a prohibited list. That is enough for a couch and a dresser in March. It is not enough for:
- Large-scale cleanouts: a whole house, a garage or an estate runs well past what two appointments cover.
- Time-sensitive needs: a listing photo date or a new tenant on Monday cannot wait a week for an appointment. Same-day junk removal services exist for this.
- Remodel and yard projects: old cabinets, fixtures, appliances and yard debris pile up fast. A junk crew takes those; mixed demolition debris still goes to a licensed C&D hauler or a debris dumpster.
- Labor and convenience: nobody has to drag a refrigerator to the curb. Junk removal pricing is by volume, so you pay for the truck space the pile fills, and the crew does the lifting.
For scale, our own tiers, with the city’s five-cubic-yard limit sitting roughly at the quarter-truck line:
| Load | Typical price | What it looks like |
| Minimum | $99 to $150 | The fridge, or the futon and a chair |
| Quarter truck | $180 to $280 | About one bulk-pickup pile |
| Half truck | $320 to $480 | A full garage bay |
| Full truck | $850 to $1,000 | A whole-house or move-out cleanout |
Professional junk removal companies load, haul and dispose in one visit. That holds in the Bridge District, the Washington District, or a job across the river in Roseville.
“Awesome service and very professional!! TCJ did a great job and I would definitely hire them again.”
Carie C., YelpThe Benefits of Hiring a Professional Junk Hauler
- Speed: a two-person crew with a truck clears a garage in an afternoon that would take you a weekend and three dump runs.
- Proper disposal and recycling: each load goes to the right facility. We donate what’s usable and recycle what we can, which matters most for e-waste and appliances, since neither can go in the trash.
- Difficult items: bulky furniture, heavy appliances and the office furniture that commercial junk removal in Sacramento handles when a business moves. Beyond the city’s limits, but not hazardous waste or mixed construction debris.
- Safety: back strain and cut hands are the usual cost of moving a washer yourself. An insured crew that lifts for a living is the alternative.
- Convenience: point at it. No sorting, no bundling branches, no curb. Property managers run on this.
For anyone juggling changing disposal rules on top of a big cleanout, a single call to a professional hauler ends the research.
Special Disposal Rules in West Sacramento
Three categories have their own path, and none of them is the curb.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is anything labeled “Caution,” “Warning,” “Danger” or “Poison.” It is illegal in all three carts and in the bulk pile, because it contaminates groundwater, soil and air. The common ones:
- Automotive: motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, gasoline.
- Paints and solvents: oil-based and latex paint, thinners, stains, varnishes.
- Cleaning products: bleach, ammonia, drain and oven cleaners.
- Pesticides and herbicides: garden chemicals, insect sprays, weed killers.
- Batteries: every type, from AA to car batteries.
- Fluorescent lighting: tubes and CFLs, which contain mercury.
Where it goes: Yolo County residents, West Sacramento included, use the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Yolo County Central Landfill, free of charge, and it takes nearly all of the list above. Transport it sealed and labeled, in the trunk.
E-Waste (Electronic Waste)
Electronics carry lead, mercury and cadmium, and California law bars most of them from the trash: TVs (CRT and flat-screen), computers and laptops, monitors, printers and scanners, cell phones, DVD players and VCRs. Four legal routes, including Sacramento junk hauling services that recycle electronics properly:
- Bulk pickup: the city’s bulk service accepts e-waste.
- Yolo County Central Landfill: free e-waste recycling for residents.
- Retailer take-back: some electronics stores take an old device when you buy a new one.
- Professional junk removal: we take a few electronics with a regular pickup and drop them at an e-waste recycler. A large lot of electronics should go to an e-waste recycler directly. This comes up constantly on decluttering jobs in Sacramento proper too.
Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris
A remodel produces concrete, brick and asphalt; wood and lumber; drywall; roofing; pipes and metal; dirt and rock. None of it goes in a cart or the bulk pile. Mixed renovation debris needs a licensed C&D hauler or a debris dumpster; same-day junk removal services clear the cabinets, fixtures and appliances the same remodel produces.
Managing it: a small amount can be self-hauled to the Yolo County Central Landfill for a fee. Most renovations produce too much weight for that. For mixed debris, rent a dumpster or hire a licensed C&D hauler. We do not take mixed demolition debris, but we can haul a single-material load (metal only, concrete only or clean wood only); see construction debris: what we take. The same split applies whether the project is in West Sacramento or out in Folsom.
Tips for an Efficient and Compliant Junk Disposal Process
Whether the city or a hauler is coming, this is the order that avoids a refused pickup:
- Sort as you go. Five piles while you empty the room: trash, recycling, donations, hazardous waste, junk. Sorting a finished heap takes twice as long.
- Pull the hazardous items first. Paint, chemicals and batteries go in a separate box the day you find them. One can of paint in the bulk pile can get the whole pickup rejected.
- Break down and bundle. Flatten boxes, take apart what unbolts, tie wood scraps and branches. A bundled pile is a smaller pile.
- Know your limits. If the pile is bigger than a pickup bed or heavier than two people can lift, professional junk removal services in Sacramento cost less than a back injury.
- Schedule early. City bulk pickups need a week; spring and summer book up for haulers too.
- Donate first. Local charities take furniture, appliances and housewares in good condition. A donated dresser is one less in the landfill and one less item for your two appointments.
Your Partner in Cleanliness
The three carts and two free bulk pickups cover most of what a West Sacramento household throws out in a year. For the fridge, the futon and the garage, the city’s program works if you can wait and carry. When you cannot, junk removal services in Sacramento do the lifting and get each load to the right facility, and the pile is gone before the new tenant or the new fridge shows up.
